Eastern Region BIG Weekend is back for it’s 5th year!

We are running a series of fencing related courses, training sessions and our Senior Championships over the weekend of 12th/13th May 2018. It will be held at The Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre, Lytton Way, Stevenage SG1 1LZ.

Saturday 12th May
ALL Age Training Session

David Keszler – Epee. Dávid studied for 4 years to become a fencing coach at the prestigious Semmelweis University. David was 7 times Hungarian Champion at various age groups (individual & team) and was part of the Hungarian national squad at under 17 and under 20 levels. As part of the Hungarian team, he finished 4th at the European Championships and 6th at the World Championships. He is currently at coach at Leon Paul (Epee) Club, Brentwood School and has his own club.

Pierre Harper – Foil. Pierre has won six National Senior Foil Titles, he has won three Commonwealth Game’s gold medals and competed in the individual and team foil events at the 1980 Moscow, 1984 Los Angeles and 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics.Pierre recently celebrated 25 years of coaching.His coaching career has been equally successful having taken a total of fifteen Newham and Cambridge Swords fencers from grass roots to GB international level, and a further six to England International standard.

Peter Wright – Sabre. Peter is a highly experienced coach and fencer. He has competed nationally and internationally and represented Great Britain at Junior and Senior World Cup events. Peter has also been a member of the Senior England Sabre team and has represented Great Britain at the Fencing Master’s World Championships. He also became the youngest ever British coach to hold a British Academy of Fencing (BAF) and Acadamie D’Armes Internationale (AAI) Master’s Diploma in Sabre Fencing in 1998.His pupils have represented Great Britain at Cadet, Junior, Senior and Veteran World Championships.

Armoury Course led by Steve Hyman. Steve has volunteered as an armourer at the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2013 Budapest World Championships. He has a background in Electronic Engineering and is a member of the Guild of Armourers.

Refereeing Course – Led by Mike Ellis.This course will cover all three weapons from Lv1-Lv2 theory only and include a written exam. It is aimed at those who have an interest in becoming a qualified referee. It will also be useful to anyone who wishes togain an understanding of the rules of the sport. A mixture of DVD and Video will be used during the course.The practical assessments part of the course will take place during the Senior Championships on Sunday 13thMay.

Coach Education Course – Led by Prof. Liam Harrington.

Liam is a Maitre d’Armes of the British Academy of Fencing (BAF) and has Diploma coaching qualifications in Epee, Foil & Sabre.
Liam began fencing in 1990, competing successfully in all three weapons at county, regional and national level. In 2010 he achieved a bronze medal in the Master-at-Arms category at the Fencing Masters’ World Championships in Flawil Switzerland.
As well as dedicating his spare time to training fencers, Liam is a regular coach educator and examiner for the British Academy of Fencing, and so plays an important part in training the next generation of Fencing Coaches.
Currently Liam is part of the team of coaches at Fencers Club London

Sunday 13th May

The 2018 Eastern Region Senior Championships. A 6 weapon senior competition open to every member of the Eastern Region. Minimum age is 13 on the 13th May 2018 (new BF rule) there is no maximum age! Entry is now open via Sport80. All fencers regardless of age or ability are warmly invited to attend.

This year the Senior Championships will act as the qualifying competition for the GB Cup, a new national competition run by British Fencing for intermediate fencers more details are on the Senior Championships Flyer.
